Collioure: Walkabout

Surrounded by imposing fortresses, and the glorious arc of sea and the Pyrenees, the village of Collioure seems at once a small fishing village, and on the other a bustling town with cafes restaurants, museums, galleries, beaches, that one could wish for. Artists (Picasso, Matisse, Derain, Dufy, Chagall, Marquet) came here at the beginning of the century caught by its innocence as well as it colours. You can follow in their intuitive creative footsteps by looking through about 12 empty picture frames, with a copy of the artist's vision close by, scattered throughout Collioure.

Collioure: Church of Notre-Dames-Des-Anges.
With its foundation built into the sea, the bell tower was built during the Middle Ages and acted as warning tower for Collioure. The nave was added in 1684 after the old church in center of Collioure was destroyed by Vauban. A new church with a rather severe outside, and now has a rich interior architecturally and spiritually. With an intense high alter in gold leaf by Catalan artist Joseph Sunyer.

Collioure: Château Royal

The Château Royal was built using the Roman foundations (Collioure was originally a Greek port!). The Knight Templars came, - it was mostly constructed when the Counts of Roussillon and Kings of Aragon ruled between 1376 and 1344. It even became home to the Majorcan court. Afterward up to 1642 it was under Spanish control, when the French took over. Vauban had the outer city wall built and the rampart flattened.

Collioure: Outings
